On Tuesday evening, the Spa minor team travelled to Rathmore to take on Cordal in the Division 5 County League Cup Final. The game proved to be a fitting showpiece, with both sides serving up an entertaining contest played in a superb spirit and showcasing the very best of underage football.
Playing against a strong breeze in the opening half, Spa made a dream start with three early goals from Maurice Joy, Daithí Stack and Ryan Dowling. Cordal responded impressively and gradually worked their way back into the contest with a series of excellent points. A key moment arrived in the 20th minute when Cordal were awarded a penalty, but Spa goalkeeper Jonah Casey produced a magnificent save to keep his side in front. By the interval, Spa held a narrow advantage, leading 3-04 to 0-08.
Spa began the second half strongly and extended their lead through an early goal from Mark Moriarty. Cordal, however, refused to give in and continued to register some excellent scores. The contest took another dramatic turn in the 12th minute of the second half following a sending-off of a Spa player. With the extra man, Cordal seized the momentum and struck for two goals to set up a thrilling finish.
Despite being under intense pressure for much of the closing stages, Spa showed tremendous resilience, determination and defensive discipline to hold on for victory. Their collective effort ensured they emerged as champions on a final scoreline of 4-10 to 2-13.
